Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual herbs.

Stems: Stems decumbent to ascending, many-branched, 2–6 dm long, hirsute.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate to narrowly ovate, 1–3.5(–6) cm long, 0.6–2.3(–3.5) cm wide. Apex rounded. Base truncate to subcordate. Surfaces hirsute, more densely so along veins on lower surface. Margins crenate. Petioles 0–2(–3.5) cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually 3–6 in verticillasters, these arranged in terminal, leafy, spike-like inflorescences, each flower +/- bracteolate. Calyx usually tinged purple, campanulate, 5–6 mm long, 5–10–nerved, hirsute, especially along nerves, cleft ca. ½ its length, 5-toothed, the teeth slightly unequal, lanceolate, erect or spreading, upper lobes ca. 2.7–2.8 mm long, lower lobe ca. 2.2–2.3 mm long. Corolla strongly bilabiate, tubular, straight or curved, pink, rose, or blue, 5–7 mm long, upper lip erect, median lobe of lower lip spreading, 3-lobed, median lobe larger than lateral ones ovate, faintly spotted red near base; nectary disk often present at base of ovary, annular or developed on anterior side only. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs, ascending the upper corolla lip, aligned with the sinuses, equal in length or upper pair longer; anther sacs divergent; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, placentation basal-axile; ovules 1 per ovary lobe; style 1; stigmas 2.

Fruit: Nutlets 4; 1-seeded; black; shiny; muricate; obovoid; ca. 2 mm long. Seeds with endosperm absent or scanty and oily.

Ploidy: 2n = 10; 18; 20

Habitat: Naturalized in low elevation; dry; disturbed habitats.

Elevation Range: 2–1,200 m.
